Dot NET 2.0a not installed

I am trying to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows XP and have had it fail
several times. The log shows an error saying, "DepCheck indicates Microsoft
..NET Framework 2.0a is not installed."

I have done the following:

Removed all .NET framework installs using the DotNET Cleanup Tool.
Reinstalled using Windows update (2.0 installs fine, 2.0 SP1 fails because
2.0a is not installed)
Removed all .NET framework installs again.
Installed 2.0 SP1 (skipping 2.0), then 3.0, then 3.5.
Attempted 3.5 SP1 and got the error.

I have done several web searches and found this is a very prevalent problem
(mostly on Vista installs). However, I have found no workable solutions.

So, I am submitting my own request with my specific parameters. Any
suggestions? Helpful ones, I mean. ;-)

Are you installing it on a domain machine? or on your own machine? If you
are installing it on Domain machine, you should have domain administrator
permission to install .NET 3.5 . .Net 3.5 installs a patch for operating
system which needs domain administrator permission.

I had the similar issue when I installed 3.5 but the error was WapUI: [2]
DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0a is not installed. From the
error log, I guess XPSEPSC intaller is not properly installed. You can get
it from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=96332

Once you install it, install .net 3.0 from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98105

I would say remove all framework including related SPs from your computer. I
followed the same which worked out for me. Install Framework in the
following order
..Net 1.1
NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe
NDP1.1sp1-KB886903-X86.exe
NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe
..Net 2.0
NetFx20SP1_x86.exe
NDP20-KB922770-X86.exe (may not be necessary after SP1 for .NET 2.0)
NDP20-KB917283-X86.exe (may not be necessary after SP1 for .NET 2.0)
..Net framework 3.0
XPSEPSC-x86-en-US.exe (you can get it from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=96332 )
NetFx30SP1_x86.exe

Thanks for your help. I tried it and it failed once more. The error text is
below. The last four lines are from today's attempts. As you can see, I have
been trying to upgrade for some time now with no success. I appreciate you
taking the time to point me to all the installation files. That was very

Reinstalled using Windows update (2.0 installs fine, 2.0 SP1 fails
because 2.0a is not installed)
Removed all .NET framework installs again.
Installed 2.0 SP1 (skipping 2.0), then 3.0, then 3.5.
Attempted 3.5 SP1 and got the error.

I have done several web searches and found this is a very prevalent
problem (mostly on Vista installs). However, I have found no
workable solutions.

So, I am submitting my own request with my specific parameters. Any
suggestions? Helpful ones, I mean. ;-)

I had tried or verified everything on the list except for Temp files.
Unfortunately, deleting temp files did not produce the desired result. The
installation still failed with error:
"Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI
returned error code 1603
WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a is not
installed."

I appreciate your help. We have two developers here, and neither of us can
upgrade to SP1 of .NET 3.5. If we cannot get past this we are stuck.

Are you installing it on a domain machine? or on your own machine?
If you are installing it on Domain machine, you should have domain
administrator permission to install .NET 3.5 . .Net 3.5 installs a
patch for operating system which needs domain administrator
permission.


I am trying to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows XP and have had it

I would suggest you to do clean OS install if you have not much software
installed on your PC. .NET 3.5 installation is really a big nightmare. Even
if you use Cleaning tool to uninstall .net framework, it doesnt help out
much. Do you have silverlight installed on your PC? If you have any .net
Framwork Beta installed , remove it and try one last time. Otherwise wipe
your PC completely and try.
