DOS print not reaching Windows spooler (XP)

WIN XP Home - SP2 plus all windows updates since then. Sometime in the last
three months (I only use this DOS app quarterly) the DOS print started
disappearing after working happily ever since I first installed Win XP. The
app and a native DOS command line PRINT command seem to work, but nothing
appears in the Windows spooler print queues. AFAIK I have made no changes to
any, even possibly, related settings. Nothing relevant here or that I could
find in the Knowledge Base. Any ideas?
