How do I disable this. A few days ago ... there was obviously an update. I
now have to choose between welcome or logging in. I can't find the option
in user accounts to "not" use either. I have an older pc and just want the
thing to boot up as it takes a while for a/v, etc. to update. Can I disable
both?
Thanks.

Where/how did you look that you could not find the answer?

Automatic Logons:
------
Microsoft method:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231
(Essentially the same... but different place:
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/13/ )

Microsoft Method 2:
TweakUI from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

control userpasswords2 method:
1) Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
2) Type in the following:

control userpasswords2

now click OK
3) In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
4) Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected
users password.
Click OK when you are done...
------

Hopefully that gets you where you are wanting to be.

It is a *good* thing in the user arena to:
1) Have strong passwords.
2) Have more than one administrator level account (with strong passwords).

I used the help while I was in the user accounts window and I searched for
login screen and welcome screen in this newsgroup.

I'm the only one that would ever use this pc unless it was stolen. There's
nothing worth taking ... other than ... if it was "removed" from the drive
.... I'd loose a gagillion hours of effort. For me ... it'd be the same as a
drive crashing without a backup.

Should I still be concerned (not being sarcastic)?

Only you know whether or not you are concerned. You have to weigh the
variables and make that decision. Personally - I would recommend always
logging into your machine and setting your screensaver to 'lock' the
workstation after a given period of time. You say you are the only one who
would ever use this PC - but I have walked into many a home where the owner
thought the same thing and used their PC - legitimately.

As far as it not having nothing on it 'worth taking'.... Ever visit any
websites that require passwords? Any personal information stored on it (old
tax returns, etc?) Many people do not think of their computer as having
anything 'worth taking' on it - until it is taken. ;-)

Again - not my call - all you. Do whatever you are comfortable with. I've
just given you the method to get around, as you asked, the logon.

I say I'm the only one ... cuz there's no one else here ... but yes ... if
someone came into the place ... they'd have full access. Noted!

On your fix ... I did apply it and it worked , but lost my desktop and
didn't want that to happen, so I restored back. Is there a work around for
this side-effect?

I appreciate your help ... thanks.

Use Microsoft's TweakUI utility to create an auto-login. SysInternals
also has their auto-login utility. Both add startup program that
handles the auto-login.

Yeah, I know, he'll be back asking about his password because he never
enters it and forgot what it is.

I have a situation similar to yours - there's no one here but me. I
suppose a thief could theoretically utilize my Paypal account if he dug
into things enough, but by then I'd have it closed.

I hope for his (the thief's) sake he doesn't try stealing my computer or
anything else while I'm home. I can offer him a variety of dosage sizes
of lead poisoning in that sort of event, all of them having a terminal
prognosis. (Or if he's really picky I can offer him a rapid weight loss
program compliments of my samurai sword.)

Like some others I suggest TweakUI. It handles a lot of things very
easily without going all over the place looking for controls.

I'm happy to report that I do indeed, know the password (lol).
I'll give TweakUI a run tonight and see how it pans. Thanks for your help.

(NOTE: Quoting levels corrected to show who said what.)

You know it know because you have to enter it on a regular basis.
When you use auto-logon and don't have to enter the password, and
unless you write it down and keep that note up to date, you could
forget the password after many months on not having to enter it.

Auto-logon also means that anyone walking up to your computer can get
at all your data, have access to all your cached logins in IE, and can
pretend to be you at your banking site listed in Favorites. You chose
to disable security.
