Don't use Automatic Updates

Not every automatic update is "critical" and could cause you unnecessary
problems with your system that cause you to lose valuable time to correct.
It is better to manually review each update before you install it, to
determine if it is necessary to you and your system, and then only install
one at a time. If you install several at a time, and you have problems, you
don't know which one caused the problem. If you install one at a time, and
you have a problem, you can easily restore your system to the point before
that update was installed, and then do further checking before you try to
install it again. Call me THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE!

Besides that, there is no time of the day that I can be certain that my
computers will be online. I always shut them down at night. Sometimes I
don't reboot until the next afternoon.

After considerable sad experience, I tend to agree. Automatic
download: yes, automatic application: no! One factor is that
Microsoft has never responded to years of messages about a bug
in updating where temporary files are written to the last disc
on the machine. This causes a total failure when you have a USB
hard disc as your backup device like I do.
