Windows XP Home SP2
owner unsure when upgrade to SP2 occurred
Symptoms:
I can't get the information from Microsoft's update site because when I open
IE to that web page, the IE window / display area is blank [ could be white
on white ].
Norton Internet Security config screen appears, but will not proceed when I
click on "next". System does not lock up. I can click on "x", upper right,
to quit.
MSN 8 Explorer advises me that the system needs to be upgraded. When I
click on "install now", the system will not proceed. Again, it does not lock
up.
MSN 8 links all result in "requested page is not available".
"admin tools" > services > opens to blank screen in area where services
would be listed
Open IE > help > about >
version:
cypher strength:
product ID:
All areas to right of ":" are blank / empty
Troubleshooting steps performed:
I can get to www.microsoft.com , https://fidelity.com & other web sites.
RAM [ 256 MB ] & HDD [ Samsung 40 GB IDE ] passed diagnostics.
P4 1.3 GHZ; HP Pavillion 511n
Native NAV 2004 is out of date, so I scanned [ slaved hard drive into my
bench PC ] with AVG 7. No viri found.
Ad-Aware SE with latest updates found only 3 tracking cookies.
Spybot S & D, 1.3 with latest updates found only minibug & wild tangent.
Microsoft's AntiSpyware with latest updates found nothing
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
"You cannot install some updates or programs"
Method 4: Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services
To register .dll files that are associated with Cryptographic Services,
follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after
each command:
regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
exit
booted to safe mode with networking; problems persist
sfc /scannow & reboot > no change.
Tried to install IE 6 SP1 [ yes, I know, IE SP2 is part of XP SP2 ];
informed that newer version is installed.
Your attention to my problem is appreciated.
