Does WinXP handle split zip file with its built-in functionality?

I want to use WinZip to send a big file to a friend with a really slow
connection (also no download manager), and i'm splitting the file into
smaller chunks with extensions zip, z01, z02 etc. I'm pretty sure the
"Compressed archive" function that comes with Windows XP won't let you split
zip-files yourself, but does it handle zip-files split by WinZip the way I
just described? It seems it can, but I'm not 100% sure that this has nothing
to do with the fact that WinZip is installed on all my computers. Of course,
i could uninstall it and test, but... :p

Not sure, but you could give them ZipCentral or 7-Zip. Both are free, and
IMHO are better then WinZip.

Actually, the whole point was to avoid forcing my friend to download any
compression program at all, since her current transfer rate is insanely slow.
Since she doesn't have a download manager, and her connection goes down all
the time, i have to send any file in small chunks. If not, she's back to
square one every time her connections breaks. A slightly amusing point is
that what i'm trying to send her, is a lightweight download manager. Vicious
circle... :D

I tried 7zip but didn't find that it had what I wanted.
Zipcentral doesn't seem to be available anymore.

As opposed to the OP (you seem to be a different person) - what did you want
from a compression program?

Not sure why you'd say that, but each to his own.

Anyway, to the OP: NO, XP's handling of ZIP files won't handle spanned
media. You'd need a 3rd party app for that. It's just a subset of the
zip features and only zips/unzips on the trips to/from the drive.

Might be quicker to burn it to a cd and mail it.
