Does IIS actually worrk?

I've spent about 20 hours over the last 2 days trying to figure how to use
IIS to save a FrontPage web (from the FP2002 Tutorial) on my computer,
running Win XP Pro. All my attempts end up with obscure error messages of
which I understand not a word. I'm beginning to doubt IIS actually works.

For example, if I try to specify the location of my new web as
http://localhost/, then the error message is "You cannot create a root web
at http://localhost. If there is a server at that location, you may create a
subweb by specifying a location such as "http://localhost/myseb"."

I have no way of knowing if there is a server at that location (The Server
option on the Tools menu in FP2002 is greyed out), but if I follow the above
advice, the error message is "Could not find a web server at 'localhost'.
Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy
settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the
web server may be temporarily out of service"

I can do nothing useful with this information.

If I try to save the web as a disk-based web only (which is NOT what I want
to do) and save it at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Championzone (the name suggested in
the FP2002 Tutorial), then the error message is " Unable to create a
disk-based web at "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Championzone" because its parent web
would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based web elsewhere, outside
of your web server's document hierarchy."

This seems to be telling me that there is a web server at this location,
contrary to the previous error message. Huh?

if I save at c:\My Documents\My webs\Championzone, then it works: I get a
disk-based web, which is NOT what I want, and I haven't been able to use
IIS, which is what I DO want.

Ergo, I conclude IIS does not work.

Somebody please show me where I have gone wrong.

Did you actually install IIS and the FP server extensions on your computer?
It's not done automatically.

Yes it does.
You need to go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Internet Information
Services.
Then right click on Default Web Site and Select, New > Server Extensions Web.

Follow the instructions, give it a name, close Computer Management.

Open FrontPage and then open http://localhost/thenameyoujustcreated

In FP, use File Menu | Open Site and enter http://localhost then once you have it open, create
folder, select the folder, right click and select convert to SubSite. Now you have a new web, double
click to open this new web. Now you can start to add your content.

I most certainly did - 3 times in the last 10 hours, the last install taking
3 hours alone because the installation logic could not find a large number
of files, including the file auupdate.exe - and neither could microsoft's
KB. I finally found it on, would you beleive it, the Win XP Pro product CD,
where I would have thought that the installation file should have looked in
the first place....

This IIS install is really straighforward, isn't it?

Many thanks for this advice. I have read everyhting I can find about
installing and using IIS and NONE of it has this procedure described in it.
I suppose it must be intuitively self-evident to a different class of
individual tham myself.

BUT....

.... having successfully followed your advice, I still cannot follow the
instructions given in the FP2002 Tutorial:
I quote:

To create a new Web site


1. On the File menu, click Close to close the current page.



2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Page or Web.



FrontPage displays the New Page or Web task pane. Here, you can choose from
several Web site templates and wizards, specify where you want to save your
Web site, and specify what you want to call it.



3. Under New from template, click Web Site Templates.



4. Click One Page Web, and then press TAB.



Pressing the TAB key moves the selection to the field where you specify the
name and location of the new Web site.



5. In the Specify the location of the new Web box, change the suggested
name to <drive>:\My Documents\My Webs\Championzone, and then click OK.



Notes



· <drive> represents your local hard disk, which is usually C:\ or
D:\.



· FrontPage creates a new Web site named "Championzone," and
displays its name and location in the title bar at the top of the FrontPage
program window.

This procedure creates a disk-based web - NOT what I want to do. The
Tutorial gives this tip:

Tip Home pages have reserved names. FrontPage will automatically name home
pages one of two reserved names that you should not change unless you need
to. If you are running local Web server software such as Internet
Information Services (IIS) on your computer, the home page will be named
Default.htm. If you do not have a local Web server installed, or when you
save a page to your local hard drive instead of a Web site on a Web server,
the home page will be named Index.htm.



These names are reserved for home pages because Web browsers
will automatically look for them when a site visitor types the URL to your
Web site without a specific page reference

So, when I try to create the web at http://localhost/myweb/Championzone I
get the error messages previously described: "Could not find a web server at
'localhost' .....



So, basically, I'm not convinced that the authors of the FP2002 Tutorial
were ever able to create a web site using IIS. They could only create a
disk-based site.



How do I overcome this deficiency in either FP2002 or in IIS?

Yes it does.
You need to go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer

Management, Internet Information

no evidence, on my computer, that it works. I can find plenty of evidence
that it does not.

The logical fault is in my use of the functions of IIS - but I can find no
information, written for somebody like myself, that will allow me to
understand where the error is - hence my appeal to experts such as

OK, that works, but sadly, the option to create a folder (File, New....) is
greyed out. I can only create a new Page or Web, a Document Library, a
List,, a Survey, or a Task - not a new Folder.....

To create a folder Right click in Folder List Or Folder View

There can only be 1 root web under IIS (http://localhost/ or http://machinename/)
All other webs under localhost need to be subwebs
File New Web and for the location select http://localhost/newwebname/
Or Tools Server Admin and use the admin pages to create the new subweb w/ the FP 2002 SE

You can also convert a folder to a subweb by right clicking it in Folder List Or Folder View and selecting convert to web
