Does Crimson Skies not work under WinXP?

I downloaded the demo but it crashes with an error before the game can load.
When I used to play the demo under WinME it was fine. I have to assume the
problem is XP., but I don't see any news about it being an issue.

I'm using service pack 1. The rest of my system specs are:

Intel P4 3.2 GHz
Intel D875 motherboard
1.5 GHz RAM
GF FX 5950 Ultra (not overclocked)

Hi Silent,

According to this review, the full version works fine:
http://www.activewin.com/reviews/software/operating-sys/winxppro/gamesappcompatmui.shtml

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the
link in the Compatibility tab that reads "Learn more about program compatibility",
or watch this Application Compatibility Power Point Presentation:

Thanks! That worked. I didn't know about that compatibility angle. (BTW, I
was talking about the demo, not the full game, but anyway.)

I'm having a new problem with the demo though. The joystick doesn't work as
I'd llike it to: pushing the stick left/right rolls me instead of turns me
and there's no way to change it . I don't remember this being the case when I
last played the demo. Does this have something to do with running in
compatibility mode?

Hi Silent,

It might, however try adjusting the various settings in the game
to see if you can find one which will change that behavior. :)

No dice. Of course, I tried the options menu in the demo, but there's no way
to change it. Very strange. Basically, the keyboard makes me roll and the
stick makes me roll. Not too useful. Sigh.

Try unplugging the stick to see if that stops the roll.

Regarding banking vs. rolling behavior, it should be a matter of degree.
Leaning the joystick left, should bank left, which in turn should cause a
left turn. Left rudder isn't normally required (twisting the joystick).
Real planes begin turning as soon as they are banked; the sharpness of the
turn depends on the angle of bank.

In real flight, you center the joystick after the degree of bank desired is
reached. Rolling normally requires "full" left stick, held there through the
roll, with the rudder used to *stop* the tendency of the nose to turn in the
direction of the roll.
