Documents from office 97 on XP

I have office 97 on my XP windows PC. However, any
documents either newly created or transferred from my
windows 98 PC opne up but on top comes up a warning
window along the lines of 'this document is in use by (my
name)'or'a document with the same name is already open
you cannot open etc...'. These are excel and word
documents. I can close the warning windows happily enough
but it is a pain in the neck.

Am I making any kind if sense? Can you give me any clues??
