Document Opens with Unicode

Hello, I am using Word 2000 and have a document that has changed overnight!
When I opened the document this morning the first paragraph appeared as small
boxes and characters (I'm assuming a unicode/ascii type).

The document contains four linked excel graphs, was typed in 'Times New
Roman' and is stored on a network.

Any idea why this might happen, and is there a way to get the correct
document back?

From the sound of it, if this is just the one document, the internal file
structure has probably been damaged. Could have happened if the network
"hiccuped" while you were saving the file, for example.

If you saved to a network, then perhaps the network administration has made a
backup copy (or copies, if you're really lucky)? That would be the best way to
recover your work. Other than that, you could try opening the file with the file
type "Recover text from any document". That would at least save the text,
although not any formatting or graphical objects (fortunately, you say the
graphs are linked, so they shouldn't be too difficult to bring back in).
