Can you help with Complex Scripts/IPA/Unicode?

I've just got hold of DoulosSIL and am trying to get Word 2002 to display
the Unicode characters already in an old document to display properly but
can't.

I see .e.g. "s#" (font formatting DoulosSIL) where there should be a single
character...I've tried enabling Complex Scripts (by adding Arabic) and
restarting but to no avail.

Any ideas?
