Alternatively, if this is a document you didn't create, there's a remote
possibility that it contains an AutoOpen macro that turns on display of
nonprinting characters (that's very unlikely). Yet a third (and quite likely
possibility) is that the document contains fields (such as XE or TC fields)
that are formatted as Hidden text. Word does display these by default upon
opening.
