first go to Tools\Options\Security tab uncheck "Make hidden markup visible
when opening or saving" the from reviewing toolbar clcik on show and uncheck
all the items that you don't want to see each time you open a word document
and save the document. Nexy time when you open this document all the markups
will be hidden and you can turn them on by show by reviwieing toolbar

I can't think of any reason why shouldn't this procedure working for you!?
did you hide all the markups before saving your document?

Are you referring to "markup" created by the Track Changes feature or
"formatting marks"? If the latter, you can toggle them using the Show/Hide ¶
button, but if your setting isn't preserved, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm.
