Do Laptops only receive

Got my 2 Laptops wired up to a router/modem but when I try and set one lap
top to ICS, the internet connection then fails and the other one picks up
nothing.

Can they only receive wireless?

I have Advent 3207 with no ethernet socket so I need a USB/Ethernet adaptor.
The computer has a IEEE 1394 adaptor but what else do I need to set up
network with PC as host and 2 laptops as clients.

If you have a router you do not use ICS. Look around this site to see how
to configure your network with a router.
