Do I Need These Microsoft 'Tools'?

I noticed when I run HiJack This to check for
unwanted items, two M.S. 'utilities' always show up:

a.) Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
and
b.) Microsoft PID Sniffer

Can someone please tell me (if you know):
1.) What these are used for?
2.) Do I need these for anything (i.e. Windows or
Office Update -- or something else)?
3.) How would they have gotten on my system
(or does M.S. just automatically install them)?
4.) If I DON'T need them, how would I remove them?
(I don't see them in the Add/Remove Panel).

Thanks in advance for your help - I appreciate it,

Mike___________

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool

1.) What these are used for?
When you access Microsoft Download Center, it may perform a validation
process, to see whether your Windows is genuine, if so, you can continue to
downlod software from download center. (Please reference
http://msmvps.com/nuoyan/archive/2004/11/07/18249.aspx)

2.) Do I need these for anything (i.e. Windows or Office Update -- or
something else)?

Yes, you need it to finish the random validation process in download center
to download software.

3.) How would they have gotten on my system (or does M.S. just automatically
install them)?

You will got promoted when you first time need this tool. For example, when
you want to download software from download center and meet the random
validation.

4.) If I DON'T need them, how would I remove them?

You need it, don't delete it.

I do not see any problem with going ahead and remove those two items.

Thanks (please see below)...

I'm trying to find out what this actually does.
(Anytime I see the word 'sniffer', I feel as if M.S. is spying or snooping
on me
or something semi-paranoid like that)!

Thanks again,

Thanks - appreciate it. I'll leave the Validation Tool.
Any idea what the PID Sniffer does, by any chance?

Thanks again,

Then modify the search criteria to eliminate "hijackthis" from the
search results, as in:

http://www.google.com/search?&q=+Microsoft++"PID+sniffer"+-hijackthis

which results in a mere 3 articles (read the 2nd one). I then Googled
on "MS database daemon" (with quotes so to match that exact string). A
couple articles had links in them (no longer valid) back to a mvps.org
domain (known for experienced Microsoft helpers), so I went to
www.mvps.org, used their search on "database daemon" and found:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/daemon.html
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html

Persistence pays off. Learn to Google, to tailor the results, and to
expend some effort to dig a bit.

If you are running MS Office 2004/X
(http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/office2004/office2004.aspx?pid=office2004),
is there a reason you didn't mention you were using a Mac? You are
posting in a *Windows* XP newsgroup, not a Mac newsgroup. If somehow
you have polluted your Windows platform with Mac stuff, it won't be
listed in Add/Remove Programs. Doesn't the HijackThis log tell YOU were
to find the items that it reported? You could post your HijackThis
logfile so we can see what you see.

Vanguard,

"If you are running MS Office 2004/X

"Is there a reason you didn't mention you were using a Mac?

I never mentioned what platform I was using
(which is XP/SP2, btw).
That's why I posted in a *Windows* XP Newsgroup!

"Doesn't the HijackThis log tell YOU were (sic)
to find the items that it reported?"
I help out on them all the time, if I know something
someone else doesn't know. No one person can
know everything, which is why everybody asks
other people about things of which they are not
familiar.

So I return to my questions -- if this is used on Mac OS
(and/or for O/2004) as a Process Identifier to run in the
background, what possible use could it have on a
W/XP SP2 system using O/2000)?

I help out on them all the time, if I know something
someone else doesn't know. No one person can

familiar.

That's why I suggested you post your HJT log to let us see what you see.
Something might jog someone else's brain cells when they see how they
are defined in the registry or where the files are located. However,
since the daemon appears to be a Mac platform process, there might not
be many, if any, Windows users familiar with it.
So I return to my questions -- if this is used on Mac OS
(and/or for O/2004) as a Process Identifier to run in the

If nothing Mac is on the host (i.e., you aren't multibooting where the
other Mac partition is visible, you aren't using some Mac emulator, you
aren't using Virtual PC or VMware to run a virtual Mac host, etc.) then
the MS database daemon shouldn't be there. From what I could find,
everything points to it belonging to MS Office X/2004 which for the Mac
platform. The only mention I found at Microsoft regarding their
database daemon was at
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2002/jun02/0603ServiceRelease1FS.asp.

The first article found in the tailored Google search has some Mac users
discussing how hackers could use it to cause serial number collisions
between multiple instances of Office 2004, so maybe it's possible some
hacker decided to try using it to see if do the same under Windows or
the crapware proliferator doesn't really care on what platform their
crap ends up so their payload gets dumped on whatever platform it gets
downloaded to. Nothing to stop some malware from extracting from a .tar
file to dump files on a Windows platform that only run under, say,
Solaris or HP-UX.
