Hi. I just bought a DW-G120A Sony DVD drive for my computer. It came
with no software. I want to use DVDs for hard backups of data files,
I'm not really interested in watching dvds in my computer. Question. Do
I need a DVD decoder to write data-only (no MPEGs) DVDs?

If so, is there a free one available? :)

Thanks!

Victor

A DVD decoder is used for playback. To write to a DVD you'll need
third-party software.

I am not aware of free DVD writing software, although I'm sure it exists.
Personally, for something as important as backing up, I use commercial
software.

Windows XP supports CD burning, but does not support DVD burning. In order
to burn DVD's you will need to use DVD burning software such as Nero. You
can also download free DVD burning software; Google for download free DVD
burning software.

You can get DVD_Pack.msi from
http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet-602-windows-media-player-et-dvd and
many other places just Google for it. The file size is 382 KB (391,680
bytes) (so check that your copy does not contain spyware). Legally its a
grey area because this is 'Cyberlink PowerDVD based' and therefore
copyright. It is however available for download from many websites and has
beenn for a long time and Cyberlink does not seem to be doing anything about
it!
