New DVD drive problem

I have a Compaq computer. It came without a physical recovery disc; I'm
supposed to burn a couple of DVDs to hold the contents. When I attempted to
do this, the DVDR would not burn. Preparations for the burn went well, but
no joy. My guess is that this problem stems from the fact that I replaced
the DVD drive that came with the computer with 2 other drives that I vastly
prefer.

Since I no longer have the original DVD drive, how can I make the back up
discs using my existing drives?

Better yet, I'd like to transfer the backup to my external hard drive, which
I use to hold all my music and photo files.
