Do I have to have Outlook runing to receive mail automatically

Do I have to have the outlook window open to automatically receive new
messages? Can I set the program up to show an envelope at the bottom of the
tool bar when new mail arrives

Yes... because outlook can't check for new mail unless it's running. If you
use Outlook 2002 or 2003, you can have it in the tray only.

Yes, unless you use a 3rd party utility as you might find here:

Usually you'd find that under Tools | Options | E-mail options. You
didn't specify what version of Outlook you're using so I can't be more
specific.
