Do DVD recorders also burn CD-Rs ?

J

I'd like to add a DVD player/burner to my configuration, but I'm not sure
I'll able to burn regular CD-Rs and CD-RWs...

Any clue?
Thanks,

Now, the hardest question: What should I buy ? :)

NEC ND-3540A
Inexpensive, reasonably fast, and supports all the formats you have
mentioned -- including dual-layer discs.

It's apparently very quiet during playback too. I want to get one.

There must be an echo in here, because I just said the same thing
right before I opened this post.

We got a 3540 from newegg for under $50 shipping included.

As far as what to burn, we prefer DVD -R because of the alleged extra
compatibility. I know you can monkey with the bookset or whatever it
is called but why bother - just get -R and be done with it.

Then do it.

It's only $50 and if you don't spend the money now, your kids will
when they celebrate your death.

newegg has them. I would recommend my favorite vendor here in Houston,
namely, Directron, but they haven't gotten any in.

Let us know what discs work best.

Plextor PX-716A DVD+-R/RW

Plextor arguably has the best record in this area, and I've used their
products for years

DVD+R tested better than DV-R media in PC Magazine tests (last year, I
think).

About $120 vs. about $45 for the NEC 3540.

I realize you get what you pay for but that NEC 3540 was just too
tempting. I read as many reviews as I could and I did not see anything
significantly better about the Plextor compared to the NEC, at least
not anything that I wanted.

I think the thing that did it for me is the fact that NEC has a much
larger installed base and therefore a lot of people to support you.

It all depends on the brand and the burner. Probably the best thing is
to get a high quality burner and try cheap media. DVD Decrypter has a
Verify feature which I have found valuable burning cheap MemorWrecks
with that unsupported Sony I inherited when my son got the NEC (I also
inherited those crap discs he got at Worst Buy on sale). Both the Sony
and the media are 8x but I burn at 4x - and still get coasters now and
then.

Yup. My DVD Writer from Plextor PX-708A using writing software from BlindeWritre does it all; DVD+R, CDR, CDRW, CDA. All that except DVD Audio. Trouble is they don't have authoring software which I am finding is needed.
