Does my NEC1300 need a firmware upgrade?

As I understand it, certain brands of DVD media are "blocked" in the
firmware of the burner. I've been burning DVDs of a brand called bulkdvd (I
believe they are manufactured by Princo). The regular DVD-Rs worked fine,
but my NEC1300 won't handle the DVD-RWs. I'm using Nero for burn, and when I
inserts one of the DVD-RWs it gets real slow. When I try to burn something
it claims that the disc isn't empty, although it came straight from the
package. Erasing the disc doesn't help either. Is this normal behaviour if a
media is blocked by firmware? I read somewhere that that the burner should
be able to burn it, but the disc would be defect. In my case, I can't even
start burning the disc.

Does anyone know wether this is a firmware issue, and if so, what firmware
version I should uppgrade to? Any other ideas what might be wrong?

Yeah DVD burners are kind of like the early CD burners at that time
there were many media compatiblity issues and once in a while there
still are with CDrs. It all depends on how good the makers are at
matching the burner with the media. They generally do this with
firmware upgrades.

Some burners may always have problems with certain media - depends on
how diligent the manufacturers are. The Liteons supposedly had all
kinds of problems with the DVD-Rs at first which delayed the dual
format version for a while. I got some cheapo Khypermedia DVD spindle
over Xmas and there was an insert that warned Pioneer owners they had
to have an upgrade or using the discs may damage the writer.

Go to the firmware site - a website that specializes in firmware or go
directly to the german NEC site - they have the latest firmware
upgrade 1.09. Im still using 1.08 - Ive got to upgrade too. I think
mine came with 1.06 or something.

The only two thing you can do is upgrade firmware or stick with a
brand of DVDs that work.

My NEC 1300 works with vitually every media except as I mentioned the
white vinyl COMPUSA disks which I hope will be fixed with the 1.09
firmware.

Theres also an unofficial firmware series by a guy named Herrie I
think. You can go to his site too www.herrie.org to get it and the
links to 1.09.

I just upgraded to 1.09, but no luck. It's exactly the same as it was
before.
