DNS caching problems

We had an internal web server go down on monday. We switched to a
backup server and changed the entries in DNS. But on some systems
primarily XP we had problems with the DNS cache entries preventing
users going to the new server. On most of the XP computers we had to
go around and run ipconfig /flushdns before things started working
correctly. In fact 24 hrs after the issue we still had a system we had
to flush. Is there something else we can do to avoid this problem?
Such as prevent DNS cacheing, or limit the time of caching? Or some
other suggestion?
