Should I be seeing everything in DNS Cache?

This is kind of a moot question since I've disabled DNS Client (long
story). But when active, I had a mystery on my hands:

I never saw more than about 12 entries in my DNS cache, and none of them
were sites I had just looked up.

Given that I have a Hosts file of several hundred entries, I would have
expected to see hundres of entries, along with the sites I had just looked
up.

Could it be that Firefox was using it's own DNS cache and that prevents
sites from using the Windows cache?

Can anyone point me to another newsgroup or resource that can help? I've
tried googling, but all I find is how to view the contents of the DNS cache
(which I already know how to do), but not anything that explains why I'm
not seeing the entire contents of my cache.
