In control panel/device manager/ ide ata/atapi My primary IDE channel
shows that I am using "PIO mode" for both device 0 and 1, rather than DMA.
I have "DMA if available" selected. My secondary IDE channel uses DMA for
device 0 and 1. My harddrive is on the primary channel, shouldn't my
harddrive be using DMA? If so, how do I set this up; I have searched for a
chipset driver with no luck. It is a motherboard approx 4 years old- ECS
k7S5A ver.1. Athlon 1.4G winxp pro sp2 Thanks for any help.

I downloaded the AGP VxD driver, if I run this will this affect my DMA?

Concentrate on you initial problem [DMA] D/L and install the chipset
drivers before doing anything else.

After checking my bios, installing the available driver updates,
uninstalling the drivers for primary and secondary channels, and reading the
information on: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm it looks like I
probably have some hardware defect that is causing my primary IDE channel to
stay in PIO mode. It looks like I will have to live with it for a while.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Here's one more: Make sure you have an 80-connector data cable on the primary
channel.

Sometimes that's all it takes to break the spell.

It is a 80 connector ribbon cable, black to hdd, grey to zip drive, and blue
to IDE 0. Thanks
