i'm having a problem enabling dma - my computer is a dell inspiron laptop. I
am using windows xp home edition. When i attempt to use my sony (sonic)
cd/dvd rewriter i get an error message informing me dma is not enabled for
this device - when i cancel the message the device does operate but
performance is very slow.

On entering device manager I find there are 2 channels for IDE ATA/ATAPI
controllers - primary and secondary - listed on the primary channel is
FUJITSU - on this channel the current transfer mode is ultra DMA mode 5 - on
the secondary channel my SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A is listed - however the current
transfer mode on this channel is PIO mode - when i change the transfer mode
drop down box to DMA if available and click ok and then come out and return
to device manager, there is no change to the transfer mode.

Can you help?

See the information about this at MVP Hans-Georg Michna's page here:

Mr. Michna also has a utility there which will make things easier.

Also ensure you have an 80 conductor ribbon cable installed on the CD drive,
this was my issue with my cd drive
