Display of print properties windows

G

Guest

When I choose to print a document, the print properties window contains three
tabs. These are 'Setup', 'Features' and 'Advanced'. The window in which
each is displayed is too small to show fully the choices that are available
under each tab. The size of the windows is fixed - cannot be adjusted, and
there are no horizontal or vertical sliders.

I have Windows XP SP2 fully up to date and my printer is an HP Deskjet 960c.
After several unsuccessful attempts to fix this under the very helpful
guidance of HP Tech. Support, they have admitted defeat. I'm using their
latest drivers which have been downloaded and clean-installed after deleting
the existing printer and driver.

My display setting is 1024 x 768, 32 bit colour.

If anyone can see what's happening here and offer a solution I'd be most
grateful.

Thanks Alan - yes it does, and also if I print anything on the web. I
haven't come across any exceptions as yet.

I assume having seen my reply which was affirmative, you've nothing further

Sorry missed the previous. Does this happen if you install the printer

I don't know what the inbox driver is, Alan. I uninstalled the printer
driver and deleted any remaining (possibly corrupted) hpz and hpf files to
HP's instructions, then downloaded and installed the most up to date driver
for my printer from HP. Because this didn't put things right HP concluded it
to be a windows problem.

In the Print dialogue box there are 2 'select printer' options, one being my
deskjet 960c, the other being 'Micosoft Office document image writer'. If I
select print preferences for the latter, the windows that display the tabbed
preferences are ok. Only if I go to print preferences when my printer is
selected, do the preference windows truncate the available choices. These
windows, unlike the others, are 'portrait' style, though they do cut off the
bottom as well as the right side of the information that should be displayed.

I've described this in the hope that it contains a clue for you.

Use the driver the is included with XP (inbox).

Open Printers and Faxes
Click Add Printer
Local Printer
Next
If the printer is attached to LPT1 select that port. If USB find USB01
we'll verify it's on the same port as the currently installed printer later.
Next
Manufacture Model Page
Manufacture Select HP (not Hewlett-Packard)
Model Select hp deskjet 960c
Next
Name the printer 960 COPY, share it if you like, don't care about location,
No Test page,
Finish

Now open the Properties of the previous 960. Go to the ports Tab. Confirm
the port the printer direct data. Close

Open the 960 COPY properties, Ports Tab, select the same port. Apply, then
go to the General Tab and print a test page.

When the test page prints, you have properly configured the printer using
inbox drivers.

Now rerun your scenario selecting 960 COPY. Do you have the problem seeing
the preference selections?

Thanks Alan.

I've completed your suggestion. The properties windows don't have the
problem I had with the HP drivers, however, the options available with the XP
driver are different not only in presentation - which doesn't matter - but
but in content. For example the XP driver doesn't include a feature for
double-sided printing. Can I conclude from this check that the problem is in
the HP software, and not Windows?

This is what I concluded from downloading a Canon printer driver and
installing it on a parallel port, which again, does not reproduce the
problem. I had got to the point of deciding to delete the HP software
(latest drivers from web) and instead installing the original drivers from my
3-year old CD that came with the printer, to what effect this has.

But I have reached a kind of impasse because I've had problems deleting the
HP software. If I uninstall from the HP folder uninstaller or from
Add/Remove Progs I get an error message - Error 16: file signature in
C\Program Files\hpdeskjet 960c series\master.hpi is incompatible - I did
wonder if this was as a result of me running the Windows File Protection
utility sys /scannow before doing the uninstall. Anyway, following advice
from HP, (uninstalling and removing corrupted files), I've deleted the
printer from Pinters & Faxes and from File - Server and Properties -
Drivers. They also said to delete all hpz and hpf files of which there are
many, but quite a large number of them will not delete. I'm hoping that
what's left will not adversely affect the installation.

You've been so helpful and I'm very grateful to you. I'm going to persevere
because there must be a way solve this problem or prove that the software is
defective. I just wish I had the understanding of software to interpret what
it is telling me.

Yes, your conclusion is correct. The driver that we provide only has the
basics. No banner, not duplex, and no something else but can't remember
what.

Not sure on the software uninstall. When I have issues with additional
printer software I no longer desire and it causes any problem I remove it
from the registry and the disk. Not a method for you.

What is your video resolution? If it is at least 800x600 you should be
fine. Other than that, I am not sure what step to take next. I know you
probably want the extra features in the HP driver but being able to select
them in the UI is the key.

When I choose to print a document, the print properties window
contains
three
tabs. These are 'Setup', 'Features' and 'Advanced'. The window
in
which
each is displayed is too small to show fully the choices that are
available
under each tab. The size of the windows is fixed - cannot be
adjusted,
and
there are no horizontal or vertical sliders.

I have Windows XP SP2 fully up to date and my printer is an HP
Deskjet
960c.
After several unsuccessful attempts to fix this under the very
helpful
guidance of HP Tech. Support, they have admitted defeat. I'm
using
their
latest drivers which have been downloaded and clean-installed
after
deleting
the existing printer and driver.

My display setting is 1024 x 768, 32 bit colour.

If anyone can see what's happening here and offer a solution I'd
be
most
grateful.
