Display driver problem?

Hi
Halo 2 for VISTA, cant get past the opening credits.

With Halo1 combat evolved.
When I reach the mission after the "silent Cartographer, my screen freezes
up, then it goes to black, then back to the game..,… and the message appears:
"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". Then another messages
appears:
"Attempt to reset the display driver failed, windows will shut down so not
cause any damage".
Any ideas please, NVIDIA Geforce 8800Gts card latest driver, brand new
computer.
Desperately disappointed, the computer was rated best buy for games.

Where'd you get the driver from?

I downloaded v163.something-or-other from 3d Guru. Thought it a bit odd, as
nVidia only have v162.22 on their site, but I installed it anyway. I got a
BSOD shortly after rebooting. So I re-installed v162.22 & have been fine
since.

Mind you, when I installed v163, I was told it was unsigned, which didn't
happen when I installed v162.22.

I had a similar problem a good few years ago with, I think, version 4
forceware. I ended up sticking with v3 until v5 was released. Though I think
at that time, I was only downloading from nVidia, which I'll be doing again
from now on. You know what you're getting from the official website.

Makes you wonder how 3d guru got hold of drivers that nVidia themselves
haven't uploaded yet....not that I'm suggesting any shinanegans, or anything
(don't sue me, please, if you're reading ths 3d Guru).

Nvidia releases beta drivers to places like Guru3D but can't officially
support them themselves and that is why they are not on their website.
They maybe buried somewhere in a beta driver list though.

Got to Nvidia drivers page and look on it for a link to vists hotfixes
install those and see if that doesn't fix your problem.the only way to run
the bete 163 drivers if ho have these hot fixes installed. You guys really
should take the time to read everything on the pages you download from. My
father has an alienware with 2 sli 8800gts's running with no problems under
vista. all games work fine I curently am running 2 7900gs sli with 163
drivers from guru3d but I also have microsofts vists hotfixes no problems
here. the hotfixes also fixed the shadowing problem in GRAW2.
