How can I run this when I reboot my computer because I get a message saying
there's an error on C drive but it automatically gets cancelled.

Thanks in advance for your great assistance.

Respectfully and Sincerely,

Rickky Anderson

The command to type in the Run box is CHKDSK /R and you'll need to answer
Yes to reboot and run, then reboot and let it run. This will repair any
errors. *Note the space before the /R

If the PC boots and you are able to click start run then
type in chkdsk c: /r /f
Otherwise reboot press the F8 key after the BIOS post
select MSDOS prompt then type the command abouve and
reboot.

Hi Steve,

I did as you suggested but diskcheck is still being cancelled. Also, when I
then try to run Diskeeper, I get a message that diskcheck needs to be done
BEFORE I can use Diskeeper.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Ricky

Try using the XP recovery console to run CHKDSK. This runs from the XP
CDROM (home or pro) or from a multiple-floppy set that can be downloaded
free from Micrososft. Here are some links with info about the recovery
console:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm

http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprcons.htm

http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy33.htm

If it does not accept your password, get out of the recovery console and
boot into windows. Then change the following registry entry:

Start à Run à Regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

Now try the recovery console. It should not ask for a password.

By the way, the format of the CHKDSK command is a little different within
the recovery console. From within the console, ype CHKDSK /? for more info.

I have Windows XP SP2 NTFS but my C drive is corrupt. I think I'm even
missing CHKDSK. I have Diskeeper 8.0 but whenever I try to use it, it says I
must do CHKDSK first because my C drive requests it BUT when I reboot, it
says Disk Checking is cancelled yet I didn't do anything. I downloaded
XXCopy.EXE but I don't know what I now need to do. I also think my XP SP2 may
be corrupt as well.

I can't use my Windows XP CD because it says I have a newer version already
on my computer so it won't let me do anything. Also, I can't install a new
version of SP2 because my computer says I already have it installed. But if
possible, I'd like to remove SP2 and install it again.

Can you please help either with fixing/running CHKDSK or uninstalling and
reinstalling SP2 because I"m still a novice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I get the same problem windows 2000 SP4 running in FAT32.
I can run scandisk from a win 98 boot disk and it finds and corrects most
problems.
Trying to chkdsk /r from command prompt always says drive c is locked
schedule during reboot say Y
and it reboots and says it needs to scan but then says error checking has
been cancelled.
How to force chkdsk or autochk to not cancel?
I changed the timeout to 0 that made no difference.
Where else to look for a solution to this?
