Disk Space and a cry for help

I tried XP a couple of years ago ... wasn't happy with it .... went back
to Win2K. Just got an app that will only run under XP, had a spare 7.5G
partition so thought I'd dig out the CD and try again. Perhaps it'll
grow on me.

CD was slipstreamed to SP1. Installed it plus the needed drivers and
windows security updates and other updates (but not SP2 at this stage).
No apps installed but 4G+ of my 7.5G is gone (including 1.2G pagefile).

Installed SP2. Now 5G+ is used. I'm appalled. What can I do to reduce this?

1. In the \Windows directory, there are a bunch of uninstall folders. I
realise these are there for insurance, but this installation is by way
of a limited testbed that I want to keep fairly small (I also have image
backups at various installation stages). Will it hurt Windows if I
delete these directories? Are there any other things that I can delete,
bearing in mind my objectives.

2. I also have another partition with Win2K installed (actually I have
two other Win2K installation). Is it possible (and safe) to have XP and
one (or both) of the Win2K installations share a page file on an
independent partition. How would I do this?

.... Oh Yeah - the cry for help.

How can I stop those infuriating balloons that keep popping up from the
systray? I've turned off "Show popup description for folder and desktop
items" in folder options but it hasn't affected the tray. I've changed
to "Windows Classic" and that didn't help.

Since SP2 it just got worse. I now have a security icon that repeatedly
pops up to remind me that I have the Windows firewall turned off.
Apparently it isn't smart enough to notice that I turned it off
deliberately (I have an external firewall) and feels I should be told
about every 30 seconds. Cancelling it doesn't help. How can I stop these
balloons altogether .... and while I'm about it, how can I get rid of
this icon in the systray altogether?

There is not much you can do. It sure looks like you need more hard drive
capacity.

Try DiskCleanUp, More Options, remove System Restore points and see if
it helps.

Hope this helps.

TweakUI XP PowerToys will stop the balloon tips popups.

You can tell the security center that you have an external
firewall and it won't bother you anymore.

You can delete the uninstall info, use add/remove to do it,
don't just delete folders. You can use Disk Cleanup/more to
do this and that will help you out.

You can install your applications to a different partition
to save space.

Force WinXP to use the same paging file as Win2000 (assuming that
you now have both OSs on the machine).

You can safely delete uninstall folders.
2. I also have another partition with Win2K installed (actually I have
two other Win2K installation). Is it possible (and safe) to have XP and
one (or both) of the Win2K installations share a page file on an
independent partition. How would I do this?

Paging file sizes and locations can be set in the Control Panel / System
area.

- Control Panel / Security Centre
- Recommendations
- Tick the box that says that Windows will not monitor your firewall

This will help quite a bit actually (probably more than anything else)
.... I was just concerned whether it was safe. Looks like it is but it
begs one further question: Must I set the pagefile sizes the same in
Win2K and XP. Or can I (or indeed, should I) just let Windows handle the
pagefile size?

Sounds good ... I'm downloading it as we speak.

OK, done that - looks good

Nothing there in add/remove about the backup folders - just a couple of
drivers and uninstall for SP2
You can install your applications to a different partition
to save space.

Wanna think about that. Trouble is with three bootable OS's it can get a
bit confusing (for me at least) installing to anything other than the
boot partition.

Thanks for this, Jim.

Glad to help even a little bit.

You could install all apps on a partition, and reinstall for
each OS...I think. OS1.OS2,OS3, Apps.

Another post had instructions on deleting the folders, I
guess it is OK to just delete them.

No need to set the sizes the same - let Windows handle things!

Hi

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

Use a 20 gig drive/partition at least for XP.
