Disk Partitioning Wizard

Greetings all...

Would anyone happen to know what the run commant for the Disk Partitioning
Wizard is?

It seems that when I open my Computer Management console to Disk Management
and click the mass storage drive that I would like to partition it does not
provide any options to partition it, it gives the option to format and
delete the partition but there is not wizard for creating a new partition.

Upon contacting Samsung, the manufacturer of the drive, they instructed me
that there should be a wizard to do this but it is not in my Computer
Management console. Therefore, I would like to attempt to open the wizard
via the run command.

If anyone has a resolution for this or know of an alternate method of
partition the drive it will be of great help.

The drive that I would like to partition is a Samsung SPN1614N internal
drive and my operating system is XP MCE.

To create a partition the physical disk must have Unallocated space.
If an existing drive shows no unallocated space you cannot create a
new partition. If you want to preserve any existing volume you'd use
a 3rd-Party utility like Acronis Disk Management to reduce or shrink
the existing volume in size. Then the unallocated space can be used
to create a new partition.

The disk partitioning software that is included with xp will only delete, or
format an existing parition, not resize it.
You will need a third party piece of software to resize it. ie Partition
Magic or something similar.

J

JCO

Acronis True Image for imaging software and Acronis Disk Director for
partitions creating/changes.
Great software and not to expensive.

In order to create a partition there must be unallocated (non partitioned)
space on the HD.
What does your HD show under Disk management???

As others have told you, there needs to be unallocated space to create a new
partition with the disk management console. Also, there is no "wizard" built
into MCE.

If you don't want to buy/steal Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director here
is a great (free) solution:

Specifically, the answer I was looking for was DISKPART. Unfortunately,
though I don't know what to do once I get there...

Thank you anyway, but I'm looking for a download that a little less
complicated, that doesn't require additional add-on downloads...

Any other suggestions?

You're better off with a graphical interface if you are not very
knowledgeable. Use the link I sent you for GParted or get Partition Magic to
make it much easier.

Type 'help' @ the DISKPART promt to see the options.

All you do is download the .ISO file and burn it to a CD, then boot off the
CD.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-live-0.4.1-2.iso

It really doesn't get much simpler. The only other thing I would recommend is
buying/borrowing Norton Partition Magic. (I do not recommend Acronis, given a
choice)

You can't resize & add partitions on a fully allocated disk with built-in
Windoze tools.

I guess what I should have mentioned to the group from the start is that I
am trying to format a 2.0 USB external hard drive.

I found a program at majorgeeks.com called SuperFDisk that also enables me
to create a bootable disk and runs sucessfully upon doing so. However, it
does not list drives connected to USB ports.

What now....?

Samsung may be thinking of Vista. With the Vista Disk Manager
you can resize, or split partitions containing data. Vista will move
data within the partition to create free space for resizing or
splitting. Unallocated space created by shrinking a partition can
be added to the adjacent partition, or used to create a new
partition.

I think this is easier then all of you are making it.

USB drive. Format, Partion. Set partition parameters during setup. Drive
will be cleaned by this. Back up data since you can not format without
losing data. You can not partion with out formating again, with windows
anyway. UNLESS you have unallocated space right now. Then right click that
space and format it then partion it. setting up partion size with wizard.

Maybe wrong but maybe right.
