Windowsxp home edition:When I try to run check disk for
errors it schedules it for next startup so I restart my
computer and I get the message:Windows can't get
exclusive acess to open the directories.Windows is
finished with checkdisk.Computer is running great except
for this.I have run Spybot and Adaware as well as disk
cleanup but nothing seems to help. What could be causing
this?Please help me!!!!

Are you sure about the error message that you posted?
You should verify the error message and repost. Also,
are you sure that you got rid of all of your spyware? If
not, run Ad-Aware, click Check for updates, and repeat
the scan until it finds zero items. Some spyware
requires multiple scans and other methods to be removed.
You can easily have a false impression that you removed
all of your spyware after a single scan when that is not
the case.

I am experiencing the same problem as "Earl" and I am sure. I am able to do an error check and De-frag on my other Hard Drive. I can De- Frag my C Drive but when I attempt to run error check it first flags me that it will do it at next start up, when I boot up I get a brief note it can't get access to file and/or that the error check is finished, though a disk scan hasn't been performed.

Dan,

Repost the error message EXACTLY as it appears.

When I Re-Boot I go through the initial Bios...then we have the start up of Window's home XP and at that point the Window's disk check starts and tells me that we have a type NTFS file and then gives me the message, "cannot open file for direct access" and then tells me that the disk check is finished. This now does this everytime I boot up. It just started doing it this morning when I did my weekly maintenance. I ran "Spy Bot" and there was no spy ware. I did a standard "Disk Clean" and "De-Frag". I also erased all of my prior set points for "system restore" prior to this which may now come back to bite me big time. Thanks for your help

Microsoft has identified this problem back in August, but
unfortunately they have not posted a solution yet. You
can see this information at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;823439&Product=winxp

What you might try is to run chkdsk in the Recovery
Console. See instructions at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;314058&Product=winxp

Follow the instructions included at that same link for
Using the Command Console which is like being in DOS
mode. Type "chkdsk" and hit enter.

This may or may not work but it's all I've got for now.
