Disk Defragmenter

I am using the built-in disk defrag tool in Windows Vista Home Basic and
I've noticed that it is different from the one in XP as there is no graph
detailing the defrag process in real time as was the case in earlier windows
builds. Does anyone know if the defrag in Vista uses the Diskeeper program ?
Is there a way to bring up defrag to show the process occurring in real
time?
All that is shown during defrag in Vista is a dialog box with an option to
schedual defragmentation and an animated cursor
which I assume is showing the defrag currently running. When I run the Tune
Up program in Windows One Care to defragment the C drive, it informs me that
it is unable to complete the process due to the disk being heavily
fragmented however I have scheduled Vista to defrag that drive on a daily
basis so I am wondering if the scheduling is actually working or if I need
to not be using the computer during the defrag process. If anyone has
experienced similar issues, I would appreciate your input. Also does anyone
here use Diskeeper on Vista or if it is available for this operating system?
Their site seems to be down at the moment.

If you create a defrag batch file; then create a shortcut to it and give the
shortcut "Administrators" privileges .. you can regularly run the short cut
and defrag the harddisk(s).

No, no pretty pictures, but the harddrive(s) gets defragged.

As for heavy defragmentation, you might want to make sure there is plenty of
cleared harddisk/partition space - at least 15% probably better with 20% and
try again with the defragmentation utility.

If it still doesn't go through run chkdsk.

You would not want to watch the defrag process in real time. The defrag
program works at an extremely low priority. Whenever anything else has to be
done - it halts temporarily so as not to use resources. In real time it
could take a few hours to defrag a 40 gig hard drive. Do you want to sit
there and watch blocks move about for 3-4 hours? I don't!

I use diskeeper on my Vista Home Premium 64bit system. It works great
in the background but if you really want to watch it, you can. I
think it works better than the free one that comes with the system but
that is just me. They do give a 30 day trial if you want to test it
out - www.diskeeper.com
