Disk Cleanup & Defrag. Scheduling

Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista)

When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be
activated when I am logged on.

There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged
on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to
that option.

1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged
on at the time specified?

However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.

2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a
specified time?

Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.

3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was
completed?

Thanks,
Jerry

Hello t-4-2

Thanks for your return. By fooling around with your link, I was able to
solve my problem for Disk Cleanup. Your link for Screenshot is quite clever.
I should probably learn that.

Since we are talking about maintenance items, I would like to pass along one
of my experiences. I tried to activate Check Disk (Chkdsk) on two occasions
and after it completed the process I had two problems. In one case, my mouse
froze on me and in the second case I lost contact with the Internet. I was
wondering if you have tried Check Disk and was it trouble free?

First, your Chkdsk query. The story goes like this. On my first Chkdsk try
I used the menu supplied by Windows. It does not have the switch options you
noted. In that menu, you have two choices. The first choice is to fix system
errors. The second choice is to do the first choice plus scan and recover
bad sectors. The first time I chose only the first choice and my mouse
froze. I contacted Dell to fix my mouse problem. After the mouse problem
was fixed, they asked me to try Chkdsk “outside of Windows.†To do that,
they had me power down and up using the F8 key and pointed me toward a Repair
menu that had a command prompt option. In the option I typed Chkdsk C:,
again without any switch notations. The Chkdsk worked fine and I had no
problems afterwards.

So, I tried to do it again, this time using Windows (as I did before).
Except this time I chose both choices. I will say choosing both choices,
Chkdsk took a lot longer to complete. When it was finished, is was then when
I lost my Internet connection.

Now to put this in some perspective, I will say that on previous occasions I
have lost the Internet under other circumstances. So, maybe the Chkdsk was
just a coincidence. I have contacted Dell about my Internet problem, and one
tech told me they have had many calls on this issue. So, I think I need to
try Chkdsk again and see if problems continue.

Now, your query about the necessity to schedule disk cleanup. I try to
practice a decent job in doing what I can to keep my PC running smoothly.
And, since there seems to be a number to keep track of (6 for me), I could
forget one or two. Plus, if I can do it automatically, it saves me one more
issue I have to do.

Thanks for the clarification on using only chkdsk C: I suspected that it
was a read only option. I think Dell did that as a first choice to confirm I
had no bad files. Had he found bad files, I would have thought he would have
done more.

Hello t-4-2

Thanks again. Yes, I am going to try method 2 when I next do chkdsk.
However, it would seem prudent to use both swithches, /f and /r. I meant to
thank you for taking the time to pick up my post an address my query.
