Disk Drive grinding away all the time

Hello All,

I am wondering if anybody who has managed to get to grips with Vista Home
Premium has experienced my problem and found a solution?

For no obvious reason my machine starts to perform some type of drive
activity (defrag the drive or start searching the drive?) and hence makes
all the noises and performance reduction I associate with defragmentation
taking place. I have turned off Windows Defender, and taken Defrag off a
schedule (in fact I use use Perfect Disk for my defragmenter and that is set
up only to operate when manually called) but still the disk activity starts
without me doing anything.

Any help will sure be appreciated.

Machine is a Medion MD8833 Quad Core.

Indexing? You can turn it off.

You can also use tools to look at disk I/O activity.

First BE SURE it is some disk defragmentation taking place. Use Task
Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Delete) to bring it up and see what's running. The
next suspect for excess disk churning is indexing. You can disable
that too and doing so really doesn't hurt performance.

How about anti-virus? That also can churn your hard drive and most by
default start up on some schedule. For a large system in can take an
hour or more to get done with it's thing. If it happens randomly
suspect something you're doing is starving the system and Vista is
madly switching memory pages back and forth with virtual memory which
also drives your hard disks to run excessively. Its probably one of
these things.

The point is SOMETHING is going on and you need to find out what so
you can shut it off or tame it. Many people have reported when first
getting Vista it would spend endless hours indexing their computer
with their hard disk(s) running none stop. If you want to keep
indexing and your machine is new just leave in run overnight and
hopefully if that is what's going on it will be finished by morning.
