Disk Cleanup doesn't work

In Windows XP Pro, Version 5.1, accessing Disk Cleanup
(e.g. through Windows Explorer, Local Disk, Properties,
etc.), when the Disk Cleanup window first appears, it
says "Scanning: Compress old files" with the progress
barat 3 ticks. It never (for many hours) moves again.
Looking at the Windows Task Manager, cleanmgr.exe takes
97-98 % of the CPU time (actually, if I cancel Disk
Cleanup from its box, the CPU time indicator doesn't
return). What's happening?

Try the following web sites for troubleshooting suggestions:

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Line #48. In the right-hand window, click on
"Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes"

Simply click on Kelly's fix, download the registry fix, then run it.
(Note: Disable your antivirus program before running the repair script)

I've had the same problem. Left it over night, still not moved. It had
stopped because of long (very long) filename in one of my directories.

Download procexp.exe from sysinternals.com this will allow you see what
files the cleanup has opened as locate the problem file.

Mine was so long, windows would not let me rename or deleted it. Find out
the 8x3 file name for it, and rename/delete it using DOS.
