disk check for consistency

I have a sony pcg-f390 which was upgraded from win98se to
win2000pro. I use an external usb hdd to keep data files
and transport to other machines. Sometimes when I start
win2k, I get a message that "one of my disks has to be
checked for consistency". I usually bypass this step but
recently it got past me and ended up rendering a 40gig
external usb hdd unusable. The external hdd is a fat32
drive and was never a problem in win98. How can I turn off
or manage this feature in win2k?

now that chkdsk /f has "repaired" your external drive
are you *still* getting that message?

normally win2k would not give you that message unless it "saw" a problem
