removed disk from laptop but cannot see files

I had a Sony notebook which was dropped and rendered the machine unusable.
I removed the HDD and stuck it into an external usb enclosure.
I can view the disk and browse it but I cannot see my Windows files just
some folders and the most part of the content - about 30 GB - are vxd
backup files from a long time ago.
Tried loading it in Linux but same thing.
What gives ? Anyone know?

single HD system? dual partitions? bitlocker?

file permissions? encryption? system key backed up to a flash drive or other media?

I am dumb. There were 2 partitions of course and your post prompted me to
realise that.
