Hi,

My brother is looking for a program to make back-up copies of a CD program
disk. ( He's spent more than he planned and now is worried about scratching
it!)

I've tried Google and checking Tucows and Pricelessware, but I must be using
the wrong search words because I keep getting programs that will make backup
DVDs and I don't think they will help here?

I'm sure I've seen a program mentioned here before, but I didn't make a note
of it and now I can't find it in the archives. Any help or suggestions
would be greatly appreciated - this is the best group! Thank you.

I just copy all of the files from my important CDs to my hard disk. I
haven't found one that won't install from the hard disk copy.

I use the freeware LCISOCreator from http://www.lucersoft.com/freeware.php
to create ISO images from CDs.

I think you want to look into CD cloner utilities. Also, you'll need to
know if your CD is copy-protected or not. [IE, a commercial "no-copy"
CD, etc.]

Best software I know of is not freeware, but shareware:
CloneCD from Slysoft [mfr of great DVD cloning tools, AnyDVD and
CloneDVD].

You'll find more info here, and a link to download a time-limit version
of CloneCD:

www.slysoft.com

In terms of freeware, you'd need something on the order of DVDDecrypter
and DVDShrink. Both freeware, but don't know if they'll decrypt/clone
CD's.

For info on those, go to www.videohelp.com or www.afterdawn.com

Also search those two sites for CD cloning, ripping tools.

And, remember, FWIW, that copying/cloning a commercial CD-DVD may be
illegal.

tho you do have certain rights if you own the CD and are doing "backup"
for personal use only.

Thanks for the tips. I hadn't thought of using the word "clone" in my
searches. That's probably why I got so many hits about backing up a hard
drive!

I don't think the DVDshrink stuff will work, but I'll check in to the trial
period for the CD cloner.

He really does just want to make one archive copy for himself. He spent a
lot for the program and now is worrying that something might happen to the
disk. Even if a company will send you a replacement disk, it usually
involves a certain amount of time, hassle and money. He'll relax a bit once
he has a backup safely stored away. He not only *won't* share it, he will
probably put it in his bank safe deposit box!

Thank you again,

John: Some time ago I downloaded a free version of Nero but I can't remember
where I found it. I've also seen it on a cover CD here in the UK. I didn't
like the program and discarded it but I still have the installation file. I
can sent it to you via YouSendIt if you let me have an address for
notification. The file name is nero6303.exe --it is about 25MB!

Trying to find where it came from I did a MetaEureka search for "+nero
+freeware" and these two URLs came up. I don't think I got my copy from them
and know nothing about them, but you might like to have a look.

fc42 -- absolutely! That's your right to backup/clone whatever the
PHYSICAL property that you own & paid for. Naturally, selling or
otherwise distributing without permission is what's illegal.

But, yes, go ahead and clone all those CD's that you have rights to.
