Stop: c0000218 error on OEM Laptop

K

kleefarr

Have read a few discussions on the repair of this error, but all seem to
mention that the fixes are generally for NON OEM XP machines.

This XP laptop does not have it's own XP CD, but the owner did make a set of
recovery dvds about 3 years ago.

I asked the owner if there was anything on the laptop that he wanted saving
and he was only worried about programs in general.

If I do a recovery with the supplied recovery DVDs, will it over write or
delete any of his programs?

TIA

Yes recovery of your system to its factory settings will wipe out
the entire hard disk and the system will revert back to what it
was when it first arrived some xxx years ago.

You should make a list of all programs and their serial number
before wiping the HD. Also, copy everything in <C:\Documents and
Settings> folder because that s where most documents , emails,
pictures and videos are kept.

Thanks.

So there's no fix for this apart form using the recovery dvds? 8(
Hope he has all the serials written down.

You could try the solution mentioned in this KB:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830084>

It seems that one of the registry files is corrupt due to some
problems with your hard disk. You may need to check your Hd for
problems. I suggest run chkdsk and full commands are here:

<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true>

If HD is the problem then re-installing Windows is not going to
solve the problem. However, you have nothing to lose in doing so.

I can't get into safe mode command prompt to run a chkdsk.
So i ran the laptop self diagnostic HDD tool and it came up with an error
within a few seconds.

So it looks like the HDD is borked.

I'll let him know the bad news.

You have not even begun to start resolving this problem. Don't give up
so easily on these petty issues.

There is no way to tell if your registry files are corrupt. The most
likely problem is your HDD file system has been compromised and XP
just can't find the files.

Was the issue preceded by a power interruption, aborted restart, or
improper shutdown?

These can cause corruption in the file system which must be fixed
before you do anything else and you can fix it from the XP Recovery
Console.

If any of those events have occurred, you should boot into the Windows
Recovery Console using a bootable XP installation CD, or create on a
bootable XP Recovery Console CD. This is not the same as any recovery
disks that might have come a store bought system. If you are not
sure, make a bootable XP Recovry Console CD and be sure.

For each of your hard disks, you should then run:

chkdsk /r

For example, from the Recovery Console prompt, enter:

chkdsk c: /r

You can create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD when no XP media is
available:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276527.html

For each of your hard disks, you should then run:

chkdsk /r

For example, from the Recovery Console prompt, enter:

chkdsk c: /r

I ran Seagate Tools For DOS and double checked the HDD.
It came up with 1 error on 98%. Got to 99% and then prompt "Contact the
maker" message and then turned off.

So I'll attempt the fix that Jose said below first.

After chkdsk c: /r

chkdsk is checking the volume....
chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery....
chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery....
chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery....

Gets to around 60% then switches it's off.

I managed to run a HDD check and it has an error at 99%.

Unfortunately this is a Toshiba 80G 2.5" HDD and it doesn't look like
Toshiba have a recovery utility like Seagate. 8(

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from

Thanks for the reply John, but that looks like it is only for non OEM
systems..

It doesn't necessarily apply to all OEMs and at the point where you are
where chkdsk can't fix the problem there is little to lose as your next
step will have to be a reinstallation or a factory restore of the
operating system. You can also use a Bart PE disk to boot the computer
and move the registry files as shown in the article while booted with
the PE disk.

In any case, you said in other posts that the disk diagnostic utility
reports disk problems so the drive is most likely kaput... time to
replace it.

Final update on this..

Everything tried was unsuccessful, apart from a full reinstall. I assume
that the HDD was scanned and the bad sector mark as nonwritable.
Gave the Laptop back to the guy , but warned him that he may not get too
long out of it, as the bad sector could be an indication of a failing HDD.

Thanks to all for your input.
