disc quota and roaming profiles

R

Raymond Geering

Hello,

We have set disc quota on our NTFS volume where all the data
is stored but we don't deny disk space to users exceeding the
quote limit.

Anyway, I noticed that the roaming profile won't be saved anymore
on the server, once a user exceeds his quota limit. The event logs
the error 1504 on the local machine, saying that there's not enough
disk space available on the server.

Is this behaviour of Win2k by design or is this simply a bug? And
is there a way to overcome that problem, except by deleting some
files or increasing the quota limit?

Hi Ray,

This behaviour of Win2K is a problem and the workaround is to free twice
the size of the user's profile on the roaming user profile server. Also,
check to see if disk quotas are enabled. If disk quotas are enabled, at a
minimum, be sure that there is twice the size of the user's profile
available in the user's quota.

Disk Space Error Message with Roaming Profiles
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q257838

SYMPTOMS
When a user with a roaming user profile logs off, the following error
message may be displayed:

Windows cannot update your roaming profile. Contact your network
administrator.

DETAIL - There is not enough space available on the disk.
When the user clicks OK, the system continues and logs the user off without
updating the user's server-based profile. Despite the error message, the
space available on the roaming user profile server may be more than the
size of the user's profile.

CAUSE
The roaming user profile update performs a two-stage copy on the server
when the user logs off. To perform the two-stage copy, twice the size of
the profile is required on the roaming user profile server.

RESOLUTION
Free twice the size of the user's profile on the roaming user profile
server. Also, check to see if disk quotas are enabled. If disk quotas are
enabled, at a minimum, be sure that there is twice the size of the user's
profile available in the user's quota.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article.
