disappearing sound card driver

Recently my soundblaster audigy2 just stopped working. I checked in device
manager, and it wasn't even listed in there, and the add hardware wizard
couldn't find it. I tried reinstalling the drivers from the creative disk, but
they wouldn't install since the card wasn't detected.

I haven't made any configuration changes to this machine for about 2 weeks prior
to this happening, so this doesn't appear to be the problem.

Anyone know how I can get this card working again?

Try booting into Safe Mode, delete all instances of the sound card, reboot
and Windows should redetect and install the drivers.

This worked. But why would it have appeared in safe mode, but not in regular
mode? I'm also baffled as to how it "lost" the driver in the first place.

John Trunek spewed out this bit, and i'll scatter a few bits myself :

Turn off the power. Open the case, remove the card and reinsert it. You also
might try another slot. I had my SB Audigy card to do the same thing, on a
FIC mainboard with VIA chipset. I'm not saying that the VIA chipset was the
problem, damned if I know what it was. But anyway, i'm running a Gigabyte
board now and it hasn't happen since.

I reinserted it, but didn't try a different slot. I know you said your FIC
motherboard had a VIA chipset. Was it by chance the KT400 chipset, as thats
what I've got in here.

Yes it was the KT400. But like I really believe it had something to do with
the design of the board. As you may know, FIC isn't the best thing on the
pile. When my card would do this, it was like it had forgotten what it was.
I could try to reinstall the driver's, and they would insist that I had no
creative products installed.

Every time, I had to remove the card and reinsert it. I changed slot also,
this seem to help, but never cured the problem. I kinda got used to the
thing carrying on in this manner. One day I decided I would get a better
motherboard, and never thought about it solving the sound card problem. But
the problem disappeared. By the way, the board im running now uses the VIA
KT600 chipset.

I recently formatted my hard drive and am experiencing same problem
with no sound on audigy 2 ZS value and also not detected in device
mgr. When I downloaded latest drivers from audigy site and tried to
install it stated could not find board. I'll try these solutions of
safe mode and remove card but somewhere I read you also have to
reinstall the software that came with board, is that incorrect as I
can't find install disk anywhere.
