Disappearing programs and unusable settings! Please HELP!!!

Ok, so, one day I got onto my computer to find that my Paint and Calculator
programs were gone. They're the ones the computer came with! I tried to do a
search on them, but nothing came up. And when I try to open old pictures
drawn in Paint, the computer comes up with an "error" saying it doesn't know
what to open them with.... they're COMPLETELY GONE!!! It seems the only way
to get them back is to PAY for them online, and I'm not about to do this.
And what's more annoying, I can't change my background anymore. All of my
photo's under the Desktop tab are ghosted out! I tried following the
directions of other posts for this problem, and I like to consider myself
familiar with computers, but they didn't make sence to me.
If someone could please help me out with this, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

You can open "Add/Remove Programs", click "Add/Remove Windows
Components" in the left column, double-click Accessories, Accessories,
deselect Calculator and Paint. Exit the utility, then reenter and add
the components back in.

Holy Cow!! Thank you sooooooo much! It wasn't until I got in there that I
remembered/saw all the other programs that had disappeared (12 in all). I
wish I'd known how to do this a long time ago, it was so easy. Thank you
again!!!
