Disappearing Mail

Hi there, recently i have had a company swear black and blue that they
replied to my email by hitting reply so there was no reason why i wouldn't
have received their reply - check my junk mail. I don't have a junk main
box, just and inbox so it's a bit of a mystery. I thought the error must be
theirs.

But .... today i have been working on my computer and twice have heard the
sound for incoming mail go but when i look at my inbox in Windows Mail,
there's nothing new - weird????

The lady at the above company told me that she had heard of issues where
there is an automatic filter and that's how my mail might have been deleted
without me even having done anything.

Is this true, is there any way incoming mail gets deleted without fully
landing in the inbox? As i am a self employed photographer and work from
home and I depend on email enquiries for my business this is an important
issue for me, and if mail has been automatically deleted is there any way i
can get it back??

All replies and especially solutions gratefully received.

Kind regards
Marie-Claire

You're not running Windows Mail if you just have an inbox.
Like most email programs nowadays, Windows Mail has a folder
for suspected spam emails. It is called Junk E-mail folder. Did you
look in there? Also, one somewhat dangerous setting will vaporize
junk emails instantly: Tools, Junk E-mail Options, the last option
is for "Permanently delete...". I don't recommend that setting for
anyone due to the possibility of false positives.

Some third party Internet Security suites and anti-spam programs
add their own junk email folder.

Thank you very much for your answer, and you were right, i have so many
subfolders that i didn't notice the junk mail folder down at the bottom. So
if say some junk came in would it first land in the inbox, activating the
'new mail sound' before it zooms off to the junk mail?

Thank you in advance for your reply

Thank you I'll see if my AVG free does anything like that :)

Yes, even junk email will trigger the new mail notification.
I believe that bug has been fixed in Windows Live Mail.

If you used the standard install for AVG free, it often helps
if you uninstall it, then do a custom install where you tell it
to leave out the parts that scan email.

Also, there's a possibility that the mail is only getting marked as
read, but is now in a folder set to show only the unread messages.
Try this for each of the folders in the Local Folders group:
Click on the folder, then View, then Current View, then Show All
Messages, then see if this makes any of the missing messages
appear.
