Disappearing Emails

Hello,

I have a user who uses the MS Office Outlook 2003 Client on her laptop.

I have setup her email access so that she connects directly to the exchange
server via an Exchange email account when she is in the office.

When she is out of the office, cached mode allows her to view her emails.
Also, she has a number of pop3 accounts which downloads her emails from her
exchange inbox.

My problem is that when she connects to the exchange server in the office,
she loses emails from her inbox. They simply disappear. Usually, it will be
the oldest 4 or 5, but there is no logic to this because no rules or
archiving policy or mail filter has been applied. I cannot locate these
emails anywhere.

The .OST file is over 2GB in size, but this is manageable according to the
Microsoft documentation.

When you have her collect mail via POP3 to her client the items will be
removed from the server and thus later the synchronisaion at the office will
remove the cached mail as well.

Either have her connect through RCP over HTTP (Exchange 2003) or create a
VPN to the office so she can directly connect to the Exchange server. Other
options are a separate IMAP account or have her access her mailbox through
OWA.

I will try that today and let you know how it went. Although the
synchronisaion at the office has removed some emails, can those emails be
recovered somehow?

I've recently loaded a backup of Exchange into my Recovery Storage Group.
After mounting it and using Exmerge, I was able to find some emails, I also
looked at the .STM file and found that some of the emails are there also.
Does the .STM file store all emails sent in a specific time period? If so,
how long is this by default?

No, the stm-database contains messages in Internet format as defined in
RFC822. The edb-database contains message in MAPI (Rich Text) format.
