I Want to install NIS (Norton Internet Security) in my XP
Home Ed. Since it contains both Anti Virus and Firewall,
do I have to disable the XP's Firewall? Tks in
advance pat.

Hi,
I don't think it is wise to keep both the firewalls.

I would. Right click My Network Place\Properties\Right
Click the Internet Connection\Properties\Advanced
tab\Untick the box for the Firewall. Cheers

There is no point in having two firewalls trying to do the same thing,
and Norton being Norton, they would probably fight. OTOH my opinion of
Norton is rapidly becoming like Dorothy Parker's review:

"This book cannot be put down. It must be thrown with great force"

I see far too many troubles with system hangups and crashes that get
traced back to having Norton products around

Alex:

If the two firewalls use different firewall technology, then there may be a
benefit to running two f/ws at the same time. I have run two f/ws for
several years w/o problems. For example, this computer is running ZA free
and BID.
ZA free has weak outbound control as it is only an application gate type of
f/w. BID is a monitor type of f/w.
The two work well together

No, you do not have to disable XP's f/w.
I have used NIS and XP's f/w w/o problems.

Comments:
XP's f/w is a stateful f/w (maintains a connection state table). Most end
user f/ws are stateless.
One advantage of a stateful f/w is that it can dynamically block source
address (SA) spoofing.
So, XP's f/w can block SA spoofing, NIS and ZA cannot.
