disabling programs from automatic startup

how do I only pick the programs necessary to
automatically run at startup and disable the unnecesary
ones from auto-running?

Windows XP does not require any application at startup. Leave the firewall, anti-virus and your favorite ones at startup and the remaining can be disabled.
