disabling ports

I just heard that you can disable Internet ports in XP. I'd like to disable
my unused ports such as the FTP port. Can anyone tell me where the ports can
be disabled?

TIA

Port filtering in Windows XP is done in Control
Panel|Network|"connection"|Properties|Tcp/Ip|Properties|Advanced|Options|Tcp/Ip
filtering|Properties

THis doesn't seem to disable ports. I'd have to add only those ports to be
allowed.

I canned my computer with a port scanner from grc.com and the ftp port was
the only open port. How can I close it?

Yes, that is correct. You can also use the built-in firewall or buy a
hardware firewall solution.

There are many free software firewalls available on download.com. I might
suggest ZoneAlarm as it's extremely easy to use and free for the basic
version.
If you're not directly connected to the Internet (cable to cablemodem to
computer or phone line to DSL modem to computer) then you probably have a
router. Almost all routers have built in firewalls...

Hope this helps, Keith
