disable ICS

Hello Everybody

I have a small network with a few Win98 and two WinXP (home) PCs.

Setup the network fine using dhcp (no specific dhcp server) One machine has
a modem and internet connection. In order to activate the othe XP PC I
enabled ICS.

I disabled ICS on the host: right click the shared Internet connection,
go to Properties | Advanced, and un-check the "Allow other network
users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" box.

This changes the (ex)host's ip address from a class C to a class B network
(as seen with ipconfig), hence no network for this machine. The wizard
cannot change it back .. even after removing the nic driver! I can set it
to manual, which works ok, but I don't want a manual ip on the network.

If I re-run the wizard for internet sharing it goes back to a class C (sets
manual as expected) and all works. Is there anyway to set this machine
back to dhcp class C without ICS?

This should be achievable by changing the TCPIP properties for the NIC you
had enabled ICS on. Note that you can change it to the "automatic" setting
(I think that's what it says in 98), but your address won't change until
your DHCP server issues you a new address (i.e. dial into your ISP) or
unless you force it on the client by opening a DOS window and typing
"ipconfig /renew".

Thank you for your answer. It is only an XP PC with a problem. If there is
a network of Windows PCs all set to automatic (assuming no internet
connection sharing and there is a mix of XP and Win98 .. which one is the
dhcp server?

I did try to release the address (as you say above) but this did not work.
I'll probably try to convince the owner to go to ISDN and use a router!

When ICS is not enabled, or if you do not have a DHCP server setup up in
your netowrk, then there is no way for any of your machines to
'automatically' receive an IP address.

To get your scnerio to work how I think you want it, you will need the
following.

- ICS enabled on the machine that has the Internet connection
- A router of some kind that is connected to your Internetn connection that
will hand out IP addresses.

You mentioned in your first post that you disabled ICS, and now you want
class C addressing. Why would you disable ICS? Can you give some insight
as to exactly what you want to accompilsh here. That might help to craft a
better solution for your problem.

Thanks,
