DirectX Update Failure

I have a new installation of Windows XP Pro (Ugh! Why doesn't anyone offer a
stable OS such as Win2K? Has Microsoft bought them all off?) on a new
laptop. Does anyone know why the windows update for DirectX fails
consistently?

Hello!
Xp Pro is more advanced as well as stable.
Disable antivirus/firewall during downloading as well as
during installation.
