ive recently come across a problem with directx. it
doesnt seem that i can't effectively use any directx or
directdraw capabilities on my computer. ive tried
reinstalling directx 9b, as well as even reinstalling
windows xp pro. i would consider my geforce fx 5600 to be
the problem, except that i can run any opengl or other
non-directx graphical process flawlessly. i am all the
way up to date with all of the windows updates, newest
via 4-in-1, as well as the newest nvidia drivers. the
problem with directx is that whenever it is used, the
graphic plays for about two to three seconds and then
proceeds to freeze up and makes the system completely
unresponsive (keyboard and mouse stop) for about five
seconds. from there it follows the same freeze-unfreeze
cycle until the end of the video or program. the same
happens in full screen, except with a lot more time on
the frozen side. everything seems to be fine in the
dxdiag file listing. anything i can do? i am running all
this on a pair of seagate barracuda 80gb 7200rpm, an
athlon xp 2700+ and 1GB of ddr400. i have nothing in my
first pci slot, so a conflict of addresses should not be
an issue.

Hi, I didn't see your first message, but I seem to recall there were
problems with that combination of hardware; i.e., that Geforce and Via
chipsets. I did a Google using this search term, "Geforce fx 5600 + Via
problems?" and got around 11,000 hits. The first few definitely look
like they will be helpful to you.

Good luck,

Malke
