directx 9.0b doesn't get installed

M

Mikko Kallio

I'm having trouble installing directx 9.0b into fresh
windows XP. I receive the error described in the knowledge
base article 811263 ( The Software You Are Installing Has
Not Passed Windows Logo Testing to Verify It's
Compatibility with Windows XP...), but after trying all the
resolution steps in the KB article I still stuck with the
same problem. I also went through all the tips listed in
teh web page (http://www.updatexp.
com/cryptographic-service.html) describing the
cryptographic problem in detail, but to no avail.

The setup hangs while the status window says "copying
apsink.ax". I have been able to revert back to fresh
directx 8.1 which works perfectly well, but after running
the 9.0b setup either from Windowsupdate or with the
redist-package the process ends in the same spot and after
that dxdiag doesn't start anymore for example.

Any more clues which I could try?

I have installed SP1 including all the other updates from
windowsupdate.com

TweakUI for Windows XP is not supported by Microsoft, although that
application and the PowerToys add-ons are generally written by members of
the development team for the various OSes and applications.

As for the install, this information should fix it for you. It includes
step-by-step instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811263 Sorry I
couldn't find it earlier.

M

Mikko

I went throught the settings in the tweakUI, but couldn't
find any settings I might have messed with.

As for the KB article you referred, that was the first
thing I found when looking for help, but unfortunately none
of the tips listed on that page helped.

Here are few additions:

1. I restored back to dx 8.1 shipped w/XP and tried with dx
9.0a, but received the same problem. Dxdiag started and
said that I had dx 9 installed. No DX9 application would
run though (problem with d3d9.dll or something else). So I
updated the subject line.

2. I found directX.log from C:/Windows. Ipsink.ax does get
installed even though the installation hangs while the
progress bar shows that particular file. Here's the tail of
the log file, if some1 might be able to debug from there...

I suggest you do a repair install of Windows XP. Information on how to do
that is here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Note
that you will need to reinstall all the Windows Update files, including SP1
unless it comes in your version.

Finally had the chance to reinstall XP. As I expected it
didn't help. directx.log shows that the progress halted at
the same exact file (msvidctl.dll).

Now I guess I'll have to start waiting for a 9.0c (or
something like that) release of Directx. It's shame though
because several new game demos require directx9
installation. :/ Not a really good performance from MS
side.

I'm having trouble installing directx 9.0b into fresh
windows XP. I receive the error described in the
knowledge
base article 811263 ( The Software You Are Installing
Has
Not Passed Windows Logo Testing to Verify It's
Compatibility with Windows XP...), but after trying all
the
resolution steps in the KB article I still stuck with
the
same problem. I also went through all the tips listed
in
teh web page (http://www.updatexp.
com/cryptographic-service.html) describing the
cryptographic problem in detail, but to no avail.

The setup hangs while the status window says "copying
apsink.ax". I have been able to revert back to fresh
directx 8.1 which works perfectly well, but after
running
the 9.0b setup either from Windowsupdate or with the
redist-package the process ends in the same spot and
after
that dxdiag doesn't start anymore for example.

Any more clues which I could try?

Cryptographic Services are enabled. As mentioned in the first post, I have
gone through all the steps in knowledge base article 811263.

Finally had the chance to reinstall XP. As I expected it
didn't help. directx.log shows that the progress halted at
the same exact file (msvidctl.dll).

Now I guess I'll have to start waiting for a 9.0c (or
something like that) release of Directx. It's shame though
because several new game demos require directx9
installation. :/ Not a really good performance from MS
side.

I suggest you do a repair install of Windows XP. Information on how to do
that is here: http://www.michaelstevenstech. com/XPrepairinstall.htm Note
that you will need to reinstall all the Windows Update files, including SP1
unless it comes in your version.

I tried to updated to 9.0b after 9.0a failed and now I
cannot get Dxdiag running anymore. When starting I get the
following error message:

DxDiag Error
Error: Could not find DXDIAGN.DLL

-----Original Message-----
Go to Start/Run and type in "dxdiag" then hit the OK
button. Post the
results here.

Here are few additions:

1. I restored back to dx 8.1 shipped w/XP and tried with
dx
9.0a, but received the same problem. Dxdiag started and
said that I had dx 9 installed. No DX9 application would
run though (problem with d3d9.dll or something else). So
I
updated the subject line.

2. I found directX.log from C:/Windows. Ipsink.ax does
get
installed even though the installation hangs while the
progress bar shows that particular file. Here's the tail
of
the log file, if some1 might be able to debug from
there...

Let me comment myself, since I found a solution to my problem. If someone
else is having these issues with installing directx 9.0 on XP please do try
other options before this one. This so called solution might mess up your XP
installation.

What I did was to start extracting dll-files from the directx redistribtion
package one by one as different programs reported them missing. I extracted
the files into system32 directory.

For example dxdiag.exe didn't start after a fresh installation of Win XP +
dx 9.0b update. I got error message showing that dxdiagn.dll cannot be
found. Then I searched the dx90b_redist.exe file and extracted the file in
question. And so on.

Apparently the installation process did proceed to some point because I did
not have to register these libraries or anything. Copying did the trick. Now
all my games work just brilliantly.

Thanks for all of your input.
